How does skiline calculate the skiing distance?

Well,

I guess they get the length of the skipistes of the ski resort and for every slope you go down get the average (like when slope A is 4km and slope B 6km then they measure 5km), add that together and you have an estimation of your skiing distance...

I don't know for sure however.

OK so it's a geeky question but I can't figure out how skiline calculates the skiing distance. It knows where you started from and where you ended up, so it can possibly approximate a straight line distance. But what happens if there are more than one way of getting down? or if the piste is full of curves (most are!). Does it keep a database of the posible pistes from the start and stop point or what?
